How to reach Ladakh?

Landing in Leh isn’t just about arriving at your destination; it’s an experience in itself. Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (Leh Airport), perched at a staggering 3,500 meters (over 11,500 feet), holds the title of the highest commercial airport in the world.

Jagged Himalayan giants pierce the azure sky, while the Indus River snakes its way through the arid landscape below. This is your first glimpse into the magic of Ladakh, a moment that will stay etched in your memory forever. So, we suggest you pre-book your seat.

Since flight rates to Leh can fluctuate, I recommend using our website to track prices and find the best deals.

While taking a flight directly to Leh is the fastest way to reach it, you can always take a road trip to reach Leh via Manali or Srinagar. This is an economical option as compared to flying.

In the land of high passes, every step is a story waiting to unfold.

A 7-day itinerary for Ladakh

Ladakh, the “Land of High Passes,” beckons with its dramatic landscapes, ancient monasteries, and vibrant culture. This 7-day itinerary is designed to unveil its hidden treasures, taking you from the bustling town of Leh to the surreal beauty of Pangong Lake.

Day 1: A Gentle Introduction to Leh

Your Ladakhi adventure begins in Leh, the highest commercial town in India. Try to reach Leh by 12 pm. The earlier you arrive, the better it is for acclimatization. This day is dedicated to acclimatization, allowing your body to adjust to the high altitude.

In the afternoon, shake off any jet lag with a visit to the magnificent Shanti Stupa. This gleaming white-domed structure, perched on a hilltop, offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. Reflect on world peace as you soak in the breathtaking panorama. As evening descends, delve into the history of Ladakh at the Leh Palace, a 17th-century royal residence that now houses a museum showcasing artefacts that whisper tales of a bygone era.

Day 2: Unveiling Leh’s Secrets (Leh Local Sightseeing)

Today, dive deeper into the cultural tapestry of Leh. You can start your day at the Hall of Fame to pay tribute to the brave Indian soldiers who valiantly defended the borders. Here, stories of sacrifice and bravery come alive.

Next, pay your respects at Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a revered Sikh pilgrimage site commemorating the visit of Guru Nanak Dev, the founder of Sikhism.

Prepare to be awestruck by the Magnetic Hill, a place where cars seemingly defy gravity and roll uphill on their own (an optical illusion caused by the surrounding terrain). There are a few optional experiences you can enjoy like the ATV ride or maybe dress up like the locals to click selfies for your Instagram.

Continue your journey to Sangam, the confluence of the Indus and Zanskar rivers, a popular spot for picnics and river rafting adventures. As the day winds down, return to Leh for a well-deserved rest.

Day 3: Conquering Khardung La and Reaching Nubra Valley

Gear up for an exhilarating adventure as you embark on a journey to the Nubra Valley. Brace yourself for the ascent to Khardung La, often touted as one of the world’s highest motorable roads, perched at a staggering 18,380 feet. The road itself is a marvel of engineering, with switchbacks that will test your mettle, but the breathtaking views from the top will leave you speechless.

Descend into the Nubra Valley, a desert wonderland nestled on the Indo-China border. Here, dunes rise from the valley floor, Bactrian camels (famous for their double humps) roam freely, and ancient gompas stand sentinel.

In the afternoon, embrace the unique landscape by enjoying a camel ride on the dunes, a quintessential Nubra experience. Spend the night at a cosy yet luxurious Swiss camp to get the feel of the Nubra, basking in the serenity of the valley.

Slight light-headedness and nausea are quite common when you visit a high-altitude destination. The key is not to panic. And if you feel uncomfortable, just chew off raw garlic. It helps in producing heat and circulating oxygen in your blood.

Day 4: A Hidden Gem – Exploring Turtuk

Today, embark on a captivating excursion to Turtuk, a village shrouded in mystery. Once part of Pakistan, it only became accessible to Indian tourists in the late 1970s.

Immerse yourself in the unique culture of the villagers, descendants of Tibetan soldiers. Explore their traditional homes adorned with prayer flags and explore the local market, brimming with colourful handicrafts.

Savour a traditional Balti meal, a culinary delight unique to this region. As twilight paints the sky, return to your Nubra Valley accommodation.

Day 5: Unveiling the Enchanting Pangong Lake

Get ready for a scenic journey as you bid farewell to Nubra Valley and head towards Pangong Lake. En route, stop by Diskit Monastery, the oldest and largest monastery in Nubra. Witness the serene atmosphere and admire the towering Buddha statue overlooking the valley. Continue your journey to Hunder, another charming village famous for its sand dunes and Bactrian camels.

Finally, arrive at the mesmerizing Pangong Tso, a high-altitude lake renowned for its captivating beauty.

Witness the ever-changing colours of the lake as the sunlight dances on its surface. Capture breathtaking photographs and soak in the serenity of this mystical place. Spend the night at a cosy campsite near the lake, allowing the magic of Pangong to linger.

It does get cold at night in Pangong Lake. So keep yourself warm. You can carry pocket warmers. They are easily available on Amazon and work wonders.

Day 6: Bidding Farewell to Pangong and Returning to Leh

Savour the last morning at Pangong Lake before embarking on your return journey to Leh. Rewind through the stunning landscapes you witnessed on your way up, cherishing the memories you’ve created.

As you reach Leh, unwind and reminisce about the adventure. In the evening, explore the lively Leh market, a treasure trove of souvenirs and local handicrafts.

Day 7: Departure with Unforgettable Memories

As your Ladakhi adventure draws to a close, take a final stroll through Leh, perhaps picking up a last-minute pashmina scarf or a handcrafted souvenir as a memento of your journey.

At the airport, amidst the goodbyes, hold onto the memories you’ve created – the panoramic vistas, the rich cultural experiences, and the warm hospitality of the people. This isn’t just the end of your trip, but the beginning of a lifelong connection with this incredible land.

Women-Only Ladakh Trip

5/5

Excellent tour planned by Wovoyage to Ladakh, especially to see the apricot blossoms... a trail less trodden by others. Feel fortunate to have been a part of this group with whom I saw the most beautiful parts of Ladakh.... Both Sneha and Yountan made the entire trip very easy inspite of the difficult terrain we were journeying through!
